The New York Giants have lost defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris for the season after an Achilles tendon injury during OTA practice.
Giants Suffer Major Defensive Setback Before 2026 Season
The New York Giants have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the 2026 NFL season after veteran defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris reportedly suffered a torn Achilles tendon during organized team activities (OTAs).
Multiple reports indicate the injury occurred during a pass-rushing drill in an 11-on-11 practice session. Robertson-Harris reportedly went down immediately and grabbed his leg, raising concerns that were later confirmed to be a serious Achilles injury. The setback is expected to sideline him for the entire season.
The injury comes at a particularly difficult time for New York's defense. Robertson-Harris was expected to play a much larger role after the offseason departure of star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. Having started all 17 games last season, Robertson-Harris was viewed as one of the anchors of the team's defensive front heading into training camp.
Last season, the veteran defender recorded 35 tackles and three tackles for loss while appearing in every game. His reliability and experience made him a key contributor in the middle of the Giants' defense.
Giants Must Adjust Quickly
With Robertson-Harris unavailable, New York will now turn to a combination of veteran additions and younger talent to fill the void.
Veterans DJ Reader and Shelby Harris are expected to take on larger responsibilities. Reader brings proven run-stopping ability after a productive season with the Detroit Lions, while Harris adds experience and versatility along the defensive line.
The Giants will also be looking for increased production from young players, including Darius Alexander. The former third-round pick showed flashes of potential last season with tackles for loss and multiple sacks, and coaches may now ask him to play a much bigger role.
Rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis, selected in the sixth round out of Auburn University, could also see an opportunity to contribute sooner than expected.
Why This Matters
For a team trying to remain competitive in a tough NFC landscape, losing an experienced starter before the season begins is a major challenge. Defensive line depth was already a concern following Lawrence's departure, and Robertson-Harris was expected to help stabilize the unit.
Now, the Giants will need younger players to develop quickly while relying on veteran leadership to keep the defensive front productive throughout the season.
Looking Ahead
Training camp will provide the first glimpse into how New York plans to replace one of its most experienced defensive linemen. While the team has options, replacing Robertson-Harris' snaps, experience, and leadership will be no easy task.
The injury creates one of the biggest early roster questions facing the Giants as they prepare for the 2026 NFL campaign.
